Pass Plus

What is Pass Plus?

Pass Plus is a training scheme linked to insurance discounts. This could benefit the newly qualified driver by saving them money on car insurance. Pass Plus aims to show a positive driving style which is both enjoyable and safe, it helps them to gain valuable driving experience safely.

Pass Plus was developed by the Driving Standards Agency with the help of Insurers and the Driving Instruction Industry.

The Driving Standards Agency has designed a course of driving tuition to improve the skills of new drivers where they may have had little experience and reduces the risk of being involved in an accident.

What's involved in the Course?

There are 6 modules to the Pass Plus course.

These are; -

  • Introduction / Town Driving

  • All Weather Driving

  • Out of Town Driving & Rural Roads

  • Night Driving

  • Dual - Carriageway Driving

  • Motorway Driving

How does it Work?

You undertake the 6 modules which could last 1 hour each. Your instructor monitors your driving on the modules and sends details of your training at the end of the course to the Driving Standards Agency. As proof you successfully completed the course the Driving Standards Agency issue a certificate to you.

If you decide to insure a car in your own name you could save a large amount on the premium having completed the Pass Plus course. This is like a no claims discount which you keep, and rolls over to the following years therefore saving you money year on year.

Do I have to take Pass Plus as soon as I've passed my test?

No. You have 12 months from the date you pass your practical test to complete the Pass Plus course. However I believe because the course is designed to improve the skills of new drivers it makes sense to take the course early after passing the driving test.

Recent government figures have shown 1 in 5 of all new drivers have an accident in the first 2 years after passing their driving test, so even without the possible insurance saving the course is a valuable aid to safer driving.
