THE THEORY TEST
On 1st July 1996, a theory test was introduced which must be passed before the practical test can be booked.
This is now a two-part test and both parts must be passed at one sitting to gain a certificate.
Part One
You will have 57 minutes to answer 50 multiple-choice questions, 43 of which have to be answered correctly to pass.
Questions are chosen randomly from a bank of about 1000 questions so it is essential that you prepare properly before sitting the exam.
The Theory Test is computerised; Candidates select their answers by simply touching a computer screen.
Part Two - Hazard Perception
This consists of 14 one - minute video clips shown on a computer, randomly selected from a large bank of clips.
Each clip shows a developing hazard, such as a vehicle reversing off a driveway. There is at least one hazard in each clip and in one clip there are two, making a total of 15 hazards that you can score.
You will need to click your mouse button as soon as you observe a developing hazard, the sooner you react, the higher your score, you can score up to a maximum of 5 points per hazard. At the moment you will need to score 44 points out of a possible 75 in order to pass.
